Sessions: 1
Building: Campus Center
Room: Little Theatre
In their quest to escape the religious persecution of the Catholic Church, the Huguenots fled France and settled around the world. In doing so, they set the stage for the spread of their Protestant beliefs and the creation of countless works of art rendered in silver and gold.
Beginning in the sixteenth century, the Huguenots were intensely persecuted by the French monarchy and the Catholic Church. Driven from their homes and their livelihoods in France, these religious refugees sought safety in many different nations, including England, the Netherlands, and the United States. Many Huguenots were highly skilled goldsmiths and silversmiths, who brought their trade with them to their new homes. This course will celebrate the accomplishments of some of the most successful Huguenot craftsmen, who created masterful works of art in gold and silver.

Some current debates over human rights and associated matters of public policy seem to overlook the questions of just what a human right is and why we claim to have them. This course investigates the Western philosophic foundations of human rights and associated theories for ethical decision-making and public policy. All of these enlightenment-era notions constitute roots for modern thinking about human rights, personal decision-making, justice, and governance.
